The positions available are flexibly allocated II/III/IV positions.
This recruitment is for experienced Environmental Health Officers who are registered as Environmental Health Specialists by the State.
The positions filled by this recruitment may be filled at either the II, III, or IV level, depending upon the candidate's qualifications.
This recruitment is a continuous recruitment, which means we will accept application on a continuous basis.
A continuous recruitment may be closed once the position is filled or at any time.
Future vacancies for this position may be filled from the eligible list to be established.
The expected life of the eligible list is six months.
The successful candidates will encourage sound environmental health practices and secure compliance with applicable laws and regulations through enforcement and educational activities, and performs related duties as required.
They may be assigned to any area of environmental health, including consumer protection, hazardous materials management and solid waste.

DUTY SAMPLE Level II:
Makes inspections; enforces state and local laws and regulations; takes samples of water, food, soil, hazardous waste and waste water; investigates complaints, reviews reports, and provides information to the public in the following areas:
food protection, housing, recreational swimming areas, solid and liquid waste management, onsite septic systems, vector control, drinking water quality, nuisance abatement, underground storage tanks hazardous materials, hazardous waste generators, hazardous waste treatment, storage and disposal facilities, medical waste and others as required; investigates suspected food borne or water borne diseases; investigates environmental health problems in the community; testifies in court; participates in emergency response activities; including those involving the investigation of food borne disease outbreaks and response to hazardous materials releases; provides training to food handlers and other members of the public; confers with officials in other agencies and persons with private businesses; prepares correspondence and reports; provides technical assistance to business and governmental agencies regarding environmental health, including hazardous materials management and solid waste.

Experience:

Experience:
Two years of experience performing duties of an Environmental Health Officer II in Kings County or an equivalent position in another public agency in either consumer protection or hazardous materials/solid waste programs, or both.
Level IV:
Experience:
Two years of experience in both consumer protection and hazardous materials/solid waste programs as a Registered Environmental Health Specialist, including at least three years of diverse experience performing the duties of an EHO III in Kings County or an equivalent position in another public agency.
All Levels II/III/IV:
Licenses:
1.
Registration by the California Department of Health Services as an Environmental Health Specialist; and 2.
Possession of a valid California driver's license issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles.
Special Requirements:
Ability to become medically certified to use personal protective equipment including respirators and self-contained breathing apparatus; work irregular hours including on-call and overtime during evenings, holidays and weekends.

If you do not qualify to be certified as an REHS, but qualify as an EHS Trainee, you will be sent the evaluation letter from the California Department of Public Health which states that the applicant is eligible to begin training in an approved environmental health program.
